opubWriter is an online wysiwyg editor that allows you to create books in the epub format, following the Open Publication Structure (OPS). The OPS is one of three standards maintained by the International Digital Publishing Forum (IDPF) which, together with a range of other open standards like XHTML, XML, and CSS, specify how to write, describe, and package publications with the .epub extension.

Epub is becoming the global standard for digital book production and is increasingly supported by ebook reading systems. You can read more about these standards and about the project to create this online editor at the Inside Epub blog.

Getting started with opubWriter

To start using opubWriter, first you need to register as a user and then log in. The main purpose of this is to define for you a work area where you can create and modify epub books. This keeps your books separate from everyone else's on the site.

Managing your books

After you log in, you are taken to your library page which you can also access by clicking on the Library option in the menu to the left of the window. The library page shows a list of the epub books you are working on. If you don't have any books in your library yet, you can create a new one by clicking on the New button or you can upload an existing epub book from your computer by clicking on the Browse button to locate the file and then clicking Upload to save the book in your library.

If you have books in your library you will see them listed. You choose a book to edit by clicking on its title or on the Edit button just beneath the title. After selecting a book, you are taken to the Editor page where you can work on the book's content. Selecting a book makes the following menu options available:
